Some Preparation

The requirements to use GoTalk are:

1. LEGO Mindstorms NXT Software Installed and its Robot

We assume you are LEGO Mindstorms NXT user. You have LEGO Mindstorms NXT software installed in your PC, right? If not, please prepare your computer with LEGO Mindstorms NXT software installed.

2. Microphone

We recommend you to have a stand or headset microphone. You can find many microphones available for about $15-$20 at shops such as Radio Shack, and Staples.

3. Speech recognition software and text-to-speech software

Speech recognition software and text-to-speech software are equipped with your Windows Vista or Windows XP. Click the Start Button on the left-bottom of you screen, and click Control Panel.

(Windows Vista)

(Windows XP)

Then you will find an icon of Speech Recognition Options, or simply saying Speech.

(Windows Vista)

(Windows XP)

You donft find the icon? Thatfs okay. For Windows user, Microsoft offers speech recognition software and test-to-speech software for free of charge. Please visit Microsoft Webpage for downloading them. And scroll down to the section called gFiles in This Downloadh . For English speech recognizer, please select and download SpeechSDK51.exe.

NOTE You might have difficulty to find the above page because of Microsoft webpage being under maintenance. If it happened, please wait and try a couple of days later.

If you use Windows Vista, you now see a screen like below. Click "Advanced Speech Options" on your left.

Then select a speech recognition of your language (English) from the scroll down Language bar (shown as 5 in the picture below), and click Configure Microphone button on the right bottom of the window (shown as 6 in the picture below). You will have another small window which tells you to speak out to your microphone. This is the process to configure microphone volume. After Microphone Configuration is done, now you click the Train Profile button (shown as 7 in the below picture). You will have another small windows and text which you are supposed to read out. This is for the Microsoft Speech Recognizer to learn your voice in order for better recognition performance. The training may take 10 to 15 minutes.

If you use Windows XP, your screen should look like this. The processes are same as Vista.

Now you select text-to-speech software. This will be the voice your robot will have. If you user Windows Vista, click the Text to Speech tab on the top of the windows. Now you see a window like below picture. Click Voice selection scroll bar and select one (in the picture below, Anna- English is selected). Use Preview Voice and find which voice you like.

If you use Windows XP, you have a screen like below. In the picture, Sam is selected.

Congratulation! Now you are all done for microphone, speech recognition software and text-to-speech software. Let's go to Overview .
